Greensboro North Carolina, Sedgefield Country Club, The Wyndham Championship.......is where we head this week.
A dry start? Ok let's address the elephant on the room. Tom Hoge mugged me right off last week, he basically downed tools at an event he should have taken to bits. Whilst Thorbjornsen mugged most other punters off (he was the most backed player in the field last week and missed the cut by a mile), Hoge was my penance to pay. He goes on a shit list longer than Bryson's driver shaft, and he won't be reappearing. Grillo and Svensson both looked good going into Sunday, but again, from positions of strength we just couldn't get the places we wanted and so it's a case of dusting ourselves off and going again, it's what we do!
156 players head to Greensboro this week, and even Jim Herman as the outsider of the field and previous winner here years ago, isn't without a chance, it is wide open. 7131 Yards, a Par 70, this place is all about accuracy and putting. Big hitters won't have any advantage, short hitters will feel well at home and we go with 7 players at some huge odds, because it feels like a thieves paradise, so let's go with the players who make up our 30pts investment.
2022 Winner TOM KIM is first up for us, and with good reason. 17th at the Scottish and 28th last week, Tom has struggled off the tee and on the greens all year. He has been searching for distance and thus forgetting his winning DNA, and it's taking a chance that his desire for distance might be on ice here, a place he knows well, putts well and won by 5 shots just 3 years ago. He hasn't returned here since that win, so travelling onto the property should ignite that fire in him and at 60/1 with Ladbrokes who are 10 places he is of great interest, we are 4pts ew on him.
Imagine a player who hit's it straight, putts well, has 6 wins on tour and is in form. Well CHRIS KIRK has that, and despite a modest record here 4 cuts made in 5 starts and a best placed finish of 11th, he is real value here. and Ladbrokes again 10 places are offering 80/1 and we are 3pts e/w.
5 players left and all 3 figure prices, it's a long list so I'll keep the reasoning short. In order of preference we go with SEAMUS POWER first. He's had an awful season, his driving and putting have been shocking, and for such a good putter it is quite the surprise. To repeat myself with him, he does look like he's starting to find his game again, and I'm sticking with him at 140/1 with Bet365 8 places investing 2pts ew.
Many players at these big prices are either on the bubble or well outside in trying to qualify for the play offs next week, but our next selection is not one of those and his price is an absolute joke. BRIAN CAMPBELL is a 2 time tour winner already this year. He is the shortest hitter on the regular tour, but his accuracy and putting have shown him in unbelievable form all season and he now sits 32nd in the Fedex and 58th in the world rankings. At 170/1 not investing in him is lunacy and with Bet365 we go for 8 places and 2pts ew.
Short hitters to the fore in these selections, and DAVID LIPSKY has beaten Bud Cauley and Ben Kohles to the punch for us. His 3rd place finish is a plus but not the reason for selecting him, as he is incredibly accurate and a brilliant iron player, so in a week where only his putting could hold him back, he has to be selected at 100/1 with Ladbrokes 10 places and again we are 2pts ew. Just to note this course which will fit his eye like at the 3M and the John Deere where he placed 3rd.
2 old boys left and 2 former star turns, Ryder cup players and multiple winners who putt well. BRANDT SNEDECKER holds the course record here with a 59 in 2018, the same year he won here (for the 2nd time with a win in 2007 also). He has had health issues for a few years now and has stated he feels fit for the first time since his complicated Sternum surgery in 2023 and at 225/1 with Bet365 we invest 1pt ew on him for 8 places.
Last but not least, KEVIN KISNER is again a selection. He played solid last week again, he is a winner here 2021, he putts well and he is 300/1 with Ladbrokes 10 places. An obvious 1pt ew to invest he closes out our picks.
Have a great week, keep the faith and follow the thief.
